The Real Voice of Darth Vader Unmasked

January 30th 2009 03:34
FROM YOUTUBE

Is it the big black suit or the deep booming voice? What makes Darth Vadar one of the most imposing villains in cinematic history?

Watching this clip from youtube, which is part of the documentary Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy released five years ago, it's hard to go passed the voice.

It is of course provided by James Earl Jones, who has become the synonymous with the legendary Sith Lord, even though his input was confined to the recording studio.

Jones is also renowned as the voice of King Mufasa in the Disney classic The Lion King (1994) and playing King Jaffe Joffer in Eddie Murphy vehicle Coming to America (1988) as well as many others.

In the Vadar suit was the six-foot-five former bodybuilder David Prowse, who certainly had the stature to pull off the role, but not the voice.

As an added insult, he was barred from doing the light-saber duels in Star Wars: Episode V -The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) because he had kept breaking the poles that stood in for the laser blades during the first film.

A native of Bristol, England, Prowse was a former body-builder and weightlifter who represented his country at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, before breaking into the film industry in the late '60s with a small part in James Bond spoof Casino Royale (1967).

David Prowse as Darth Vadar
After getting his big break as Darth in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, apparently he auditioned for the part of Superman in Richard Donner's original 1978 version, but obviously lost out to Christopher Reeve. He later become Reeve's trainer for that film.

He played a similar role, assisting a young Cary Elwes for his part as the swashbuckling Westley during the filming of that classic fantasy flick The Princess Bride (1987).

As far as on-screen performances go, there wasn't much for Prowse after Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983). Hayden Christensen donned the Vadar outfit for the character's brief appearance in Revenge of the Sith (2005).
