Forget box-office sales, the real 'worth' of a film's popularity these days is illegal download figures. Though when it comes to the 2008 'best of' list, it doesn't actually make a difference at the top.
TorrentFreak.com has published BitTorrent's annual 'Most Pirated Movies of the Year' and sitting clearly in No.1 position is, of course, The Dark Knight.
Along with the $996,500,000 million the Christopher Nolan-directed film has made at the cinema around the world ($530,722,000 on US screens), it has also racked up a staggering 7,030,000 illegal downloads.
"Comments on various BitTorrent sites reveal that many downloaders obtained an illegal copy after they had already watched the movie in the movie theater," said the TorrentFreak.com article.
It goes on to say that, as with every other blockbuster, The Dark Knight was leaked onto the Internet in various formats.
"It began right after the premiere in July with a cammed version," the article said. "The ‘cam’ was followed by a DVD-screener in early September, and a DVD in November.
"The latter release turned out to be the most popular among filesharers."
Runner-up on the BitTorrent list is surprisingly The Incredible Hulk, and not Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Ironman, which were second and third at the box office respectively.
While the Edward Norton-Hulk could manage just $262,300,000 in ticket sales around the world, it was downloaded 5,840,000 times, which, in a way, could be a win for the producers.
Interestingly, the aforementioned Indy and Iron movies didn't even make the top 10, with Jason Statham's The Bank Job coming in third with 5,410,000 downloads - a figure not that far behind the amount of money it made in theatres internationally, $64,300,000.
You Don't Mess With the Zohan, with Adam Sandler, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, with Nicholas Cage rounded out the top five.
