River ¬¬~~~Root of Life

A River Runs Through It--Flyfishing
“Eventually, all things merge into one … and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words … and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.”

—— A River Runs Through It

Two brothers grew up in a Christian family, strictly educated by their father, a priest. During their childhood, they went flyfishing, they followed Dad recognizing the Blackroad, and they came to love the river. Lying on the grass, younger brother Paul (Brad Pitt)asked the elder one Norm “what you got to do in the future?”, and Norm answered without hesitation “to be a priest … or a boxer.” While the same question thrown to Paul, he grinned innocently “I’ll be a best flyfisher.” “Not a priest?” Norm asked, “maybe” Paul winked ….
Time flies. Years later, Norm graduated from a famous university and returned home. While Paul has worked in a local news agency as a reporter. Differences between the two brothers took on when they went flyfishing. For the first time Norm saw Paul break father-and-sons’ agreement on how to fish. Paul developed his own way --- swing the line as a rainbow over the river and then drop the line into waters. “Wonderful!” is the inner word jumped into Norm’s mind. However, as Norm bad the impulse to change, he always had his strong will surpass the instinct. And for Paul, he was an adventurer and an innovator.

What happened later seemed natural. Norm fell in love with a nice girl Jess, and got a job as a professor in Chicago University. Whereas Paul sticked to an Indian bait-seller and gambled to death. The last time for father and sons went to fish, Paul went with waters and got the biggest fish, which proved he’s a best flyfisher and showed his new way of flyfishing once again. Nevertheless, days later Norm was asked to the police station and told that Paul was beaten to death by gamblers. Paul’s right hand was totally broken….
Is it a good ending of a persons’ life? Is it the case that a person is doomed to die after he fulfilled his dream? As questions still hover, the movie revealed itself: Life is continuing. Dad and Mum passed away. Jess went to heaven. When it was finally Norm alone, he still went flyfishing. The movie ended with Norm’s words “eventually, all things merge into one … I am haunted by waters.”
I sat still, couldn’t move myself. The train of my thought flashed backward and jumped forward. I was haunted by this movie “A River Runs Through It”. But what is it? Is it a love expressed by Paul “I will never leave Montana”? Is it a habit of flyfishing in the river? Or is it a root hidden in everybody’s heart? No one has no hometown. There’re memories, stories, dreams, either sweet or bitter. As a person buried “part of him” under the tree of his hometown, did he still remember to come back and took a look at them as time passes by. It is a person’s root. Wherever he goes, whatever he does, there’s forever a voice calling “come back, come back”!
“All things merge into one”, every one is mortal. Paul’s death at such an early age has puzzled me for time. At last I thought of the godfather’s motto” a person has his destiny”. There are other points can be picked out and discussed about. From Norm and Jess’s love, we can see that the greatest love is the strongest tolerance. Through the description of the country life, we may get close to Montana, a state of “three things you should never be late for-work, church and fish”.
“A River Runs Through It”, a movie tells us a story through the peaceful melody of youth, love, life and death. Looking out of the window, taking in the sunny fresh air, I was wondering as a person clapped his hand hard on the Echo Wall of Heaven, could he hear the echo of his life, could he hold the root of his own? “A river runs over rocks from the basement of time. Under the rocks are the words … and some of the words are theirs”.

Sorry I missed this when you first posted! A great post on one of my favorite movies. I did a post a while back of the best fishing movies. This and JAWS are my favorites. Today this is #1.
