M. Night Shyamalan seems to have lost his move-making mojo in recent years.
The writer-director last two films, The Happening, which I haven't seen yet, and The Lady in the Water, which I unfortunately have, both received a luke-warm response from audiences.
But, while Night shot to fame for the Oscar-nominated Sixth Sense (1999), he was really at his best in 2000 when he made the under-rated Unbreakable.
Starring Bruce Willis, it was quite a brilliant take on the superhero genre, bringing a realism long before Christopher Nolan's The Dark Night, or TV's Heroes.
Willis starred as a middle-aged suburban father-husband who finds out he has special powers after being the only passenger to survive a massive train crash.
The use of the villain, Mr Glass, played by Samuel L. Jackson, saw 'twist-master' Night at his most clever.
The good news is Night is now planning a sequel, according to scifi.com
He said was hurt after the original Unbreakable failed to fire. It has since gotten cult following on DVD though.
"When Unbreakable came out, I was like, 'God, man, I'm so excited.' ... No one has really done comic books like this: reality-based comic books,'' Night said.
"When the reaction was mixed ... I was pettily hurt, and I was like, 'God, I took so many incredible risks' and things like that."
He said he was initially put-off from making a follow-up, but is now determined to get it happening.
"I want to write it right now, but I want to write it for the right reasons. I want a story to pop into my head that is organic and expressive of who I am," he told scfi.com
Let's just hope he can get his mojo back...

Personally, I liked Unbreakable. It was non-formulaic and yes, reality-based. What would you do if you find out you have super-powers in the real world. No fancy costumes and all that because the director was essentially exploring the drama. Very nicely done... except audiences seem to be either the drama/horror types (expecting some drastic shock factor) or the super-hero loving type.. expecting costumes and CGIs...

I was actually disappointed by the unoriginality of Sixth Sense, but then totally blown away by Unbreakable.
