MOVIE NEWS
Another day, another remake being planned. If four Karate Kid movies in the last 25 years just isn't enough, Hollywood is about to start work on a fifth, with none other than legendary Chinese martial artist Jackie Chan.
The 54-year-old star of the Rush Hour series andrecently-released The Forbidden Kingdom is reportedly close to signing on to play Mr Miyagi in what will be a loose remake of the original Karate Kid film from 1984.
That cult favorite, which starred then stand-up comic Pat Morita as Kesuke Miyagi and forever young Outsider Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, would eventually spawn three sequels, the last of which, The Next Karate Kid (1994), featured a young Hilary Swank.
It's interesting to note that Morita, who appeared in all four movies, was the first American-born Asian nominated for an acting Oscar for his role as Mr Miyagi in the orginal.
It has already been confirmed 10-year-old Jaden Smith will play the title character in the new version which is due to start shooting in June this year before a 2010 cinematic release. His dad, box-office champ Will Smith, is co-producing the movie.
Filming will take place in "an exotic Asian locale", says Variety, as opposed to suburban America, the backdrop of the original. Though the story will again be based around a young bullied boy who forms an unlikely union with an eccentric mentor.
Dutchman Harald Zwart, the man behind other light family comedy fares Agent Cody Banks and The Pink Panther 2, will direct the film for Columbia Pictures.
I wonder if we'll see the 'Crane'? Or even some waxing?
