How about a Godfather-style Superman?

GENERAL RAMBLINGS
While Warner Brothers is still trying to figure out what the hell they are going to do with their star alien, Superman, a prominant screenwriter has revealed his grand plan for the Man of Steel.
Mark Millar, the man behind the recent big screen adaptation of Wanted, wants to create a trilogy of Superman films, Godfather-style - but, of course, without the crappy third installment.
The guy wants to make Warner an offer they can't refuse.
Miller was recently interviewed by Empire, and said it was his desire to wipe the slate clean, forget the awful (he didn't say that, I did) Superman Returns and go for a complete ... wait for it, it's that word again ... reboot.
That means starting off with another origin story, a true beginning, and with it an actual ending to the story about the big fella from outer space with the red underpants.
"It’s gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him," Millar told Empire
"The Dark Knight showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now.”
Miller also took a swipe at Bryan Singer, director of 2006's critically-panned Superman Returns, and rightly so. It was looked upon as a sequel to Superman II (1981).
He makes a good point, saying, "The problem with Superman Returns was like releasing Star Wars in ’77, The Empire Strikes Back in ’80 and then waiting 28 years to release Return of the Jedi - it wasn’t relevant.
"I understand what Bryan Singer was trying to do, to pay homage to Richard Donner’s original vision, but I think you should pay homage by doing something completely different."
That's where Millar himself comes in. He wants his Godfather-style Superman to "start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."
Full credit to Millar for coming up with something different, and by God, the franchise needs it. Something big to do justice to the character.
But, not sure we need another origin story though. Richard Donner did a good job with it in 1978, and even TV series Smallville, featuring an adolescent Clark Kent learning about is powers, has had its moments.
What we need is a mature Superman, a superhero fully at ease with who he is and what he needs to do. No more trying to grow up, dealing with failed romances, or even coming to terms with being a young daddy for the first time. I'm sorry, but forget that kid from Returns!
Just get him out there, and kicking some real super villain ass, and I'm not talking bloody Lex Luther again, but someone, or something, capable of iving him a decent fight, some real action.
There's a whole gammet of arch enemies that have never even come close to appearing on the big screen - Doomsday, Brainiac, Darkseid ... C'mon, it's a comic book movie. Make it exciting.
And no more boy-men to play him. So no more Branden Rouths or Tom Wellings.
Unless, of course, it is something like this ... Classic.

I mentioned it on my site, but an adaptation of "The Dark Knight Returns" and the sequel would be perfect... they include Superman...

I'm sure Superman went a bit off the rail in the comic series and bacame a bit of a bad boy. This is what need to be brought into the movie franchise. Get rid of the fluffy floss and put some meat on the table.
Batman has shown how it can be done. A similar formula could help the Man of Steel.

I really think they need a new Superman movie, but something that goes all out with action. The closest we've come is Matrix Reloaded when Keanu was flying around and kicking lots of ass.
Definitely something dark too, not quite Batman dark, but enough of the cutesy, romance, 'oh, who am I' kind stuff.
