Hot shot director Christopher Nolan has given one of his most insightful interviews since his The Dark Knight took the world by storm - but still fails to give a definitive answer as to whether he will be helming a follow-up.
After taking a well-earned break, Nolan sat down with the LA Times, to talk about the success of his blockbuster and the possibility of making a third Batman film.
"There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question," he was quoted as saying.
"On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?'
Hmm ...good question. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was an obvious stand-out, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi had its moments, as did Revenge of the Sith, albeit a little less, but Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End and The Godfather Part 3 were disappointing to say the least.
Nolan does leave the door open though by saying ... "in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie (after 2005's Batman Begins), and there haven't been too many of those either.
"It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.''
I hope Nolan will be back on board - and reckon he will - because you know the studio will want another Caped Crusader adventure on the big screen regardless. And if not Nolan they may turn to a Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin) or Brett Ratner (X-Men 3) and stuff up the whole series.
Nolan obviously love a challenge too. And there would be no bigger task in movie-making than trying to both top The Dark Knight and also make a decent third film of a trilogy. One that isn't flawed in so many ways (ala Spidey 3) and comes off looking like a cash-cow.
Anyway, Nolan has a bit to say about various aspects of The Dark Knight, including the late great Heath Ledger. Read it here
