Pondering cape fear

WHAT IF...
Bryan Singer got a hold of Batman before Christopher Nolan did ...
It was never on the cards, but it is interesting to think how an attempt by him to 'reboot' that franchise might've turned out, and with Brandon Routh in the lead role and not Christian Bale.
You would reckon it would've been a bit lighter than Nolan's Batman Begins (2005), which did ultimately shine the spotlight back on the Caped Crusader in stunning fashion.
We certainly wouldn't have got The Dark Knight (2008), which would be bad, but we wouldn't have got Superman Returns (2006) either, which would be good.
Instead of trying to re-energise the Man of Steel series with his sappy homage to Richard Donner (the director of the original from 1978), what Singer should've in fact done was stuck it out with X-Men.
He directed the first two, with great success, particularly the second, but vacated the chair for superheo in the red undies and was replaced by Brett Ratner.
The move effectively ruined two series, one before it even had a chance to get started.
There has been conflicting reports for some time now about the start of the Superman, whether Warner Bros will continue with Singer's vision (kid and all) or take things in a completely different path.
You have to remember Superman Returns was effectively a sequel to that classic Superman II, which I watched for about the gazillionth time last week. Well, it was on Foxtel and there was nothing else on ...
Anyway, Routh himself was interviewed recently by IESB.net while promoting Zack and Miri Make a Porno, in which he plays a gay porn star.
Presumably desperate to get back into the blue outfit, Routh had a bit to say about Superman to the fanboys interviewing him.
He said the movie would not need to be as dark as The Dark Knight, but would like a darker villain, namely Brainiac, which I would agree with.
Enough with the Lex Luthors already. After five movies, we still haven't seen Brainiac, Superman's best known nemesis behind Lex.
