MOVIE NEWS
It appears yet another comic book is about to get the big screen treatment for the first time. Atlantis Rising looks set to follow in the footsteps of upcoming graduates The Spirit (released later this month) and Watchmen (coming out in March).
Atlantis Rising is pretty self-explanetary. It's about the long thought long lost Atlantean race 'rising' from beneath the sea to wage a war on us land-dwelling humans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks Pictures wants Atlantis rising envisioned as a big-budget, effects-driven sci-fi war movie in the vein of the James Cameron-directed Aliens and The Abyss", and in theaters by 2011.
"In all the classic versions of this kind of movie, the threat is always from the stars," co-producer Roberto Orci said.
""The idea that it's somehow our cousins who went off in a different path of evolution who have been here, literally, underneath our oceans. ... That's fascinating, the idea of secrets right under your nose."
The website says Len Wiseman is expected to direct the film, with Jay Harold in negotiations to write the script. So, yeah, it's in very early starge of development.
Wiseman is relatively new on the scene, having made his debut at the helm with the sci-fi cult hit Underworld (2003), before making its follow-up, Underworld Evolution (2006), and then entering the big stage of action with Live Free and Die Hard (2007).
Jay Harold has even less experience, having written only Awake (2007), about a man who suffers "anesthetic awareness", finding himself awake and aware, but paralyzed, which he also directed, and the upcoming Army of the Dead (2010) about a zombie-infested future.
Let's hope he doesn't find himself out of his depth. Boom. Boom.
