Razzies unveil worst movies of 2008

January 22nd 2009 01:06
MOVIE NEWS

The Hottie and the Nottie
As we move closer to the annual Academy Awards ceremony it means some movie producers are also bracing themselves for another less dignified night of gongs - the Golden Raspberries.

Now in it's 29th year of "dishonouring Hollywood's Worst", the Razzies will be held on the night before the Oscars.

This year movies such as The Happening, The Love Guru and In the Name of the King, and actors like Al Pacino and Paris Hilton lead the nominations, which were released yesterday.

"It wasn’t just the American economy that took a disastrous downturn in 2008 — so did the quality of Hollywood movie-making," so says the Razzies website.

"Among the contenders for the Worst Picture are several laugh-free comedies, the year's most laughable vision of the apocalypse, a pair of puerile parodies, a couple of big budget B.O. bombs, and a decidedly un-romantic “romantic comedy” co-produced by Paris Hilton."

I suppose the most depressing thing is how much money was thrown at those movies and, then, how much money they made at the box office...

Not many surprises here! I cringed most of the way through Meet The Spartans and The Love Guru.

Hey Cibby,

Yeah, according to the figures Love Guru made about half of the $60m spent on it.
In the Name of the King cost about the same, and made even less - about $15m I think.
I just can't believe someone actually gave Uwe Boll $60m to make a movie. They should be giving him that much to not make one ...
I think he gets some tax break when he films in his home country of Germany, but even so ... the guy just needs to give up.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Michelle,
I haven't actually seen many of these films - with good reason. The Happening was an interesting concept, but poorly executed.
Any of those spoof movies I just won't go near, ditto anything with Paris - even that home-made video hehe.
Cheers

Poor Paris Hilton.
She tries so hard but still fails to impress in any of her film roles so far.
The only good parts of Repo! were the scenes with Sarah Brightman.
I've not seen The Hottie and the Nottie, but I think it sounds interesting.

I really liked Speed Racer so I hope it doesn't get the Razzie.

I think Pierce Brosnan was nominated mostly for his singing abilities than his acting in Mamma Mia! I loved the movie and didn't mind the off-key singing.

I'm quite concerned with the number of times Mark Wahlberg and his films appear as Razzie nominations.
I hope he's good in the Peter Jackson-directed film The Lovely Bones.

Most deserving of Razzies are Mike Myers and his film The Love Guru and Eddie Murphy and his film Meet Dave.

Cheers!
